“You’ll hurt the children!”
“Being gay is a choice!”
I’ve heard both of these statements from various Christian advocates who oppose the legal recognition of my marriage. But i want to ask:
“What about the kids who are gay?” (see James’ testimony above)
“If being gay is a choice, why do you think kids are making it? Kids who may have never even been kissed?”

Hey, I appreciated your insight in opening this area up to discussion. In light of James’ testimony and after the absorption of the American sexual revolution into culture, it is obvious that the level of awareness in children is become more and more prominent. It is evident (ask any homosexual, myself included) that sexual orientation is not a choice. First, no one would choose this for themselves when faced with so much… nagging and remarks of second-class citizenship and inferiority, as James so well put it.
It is not that kids are choosing to be gay, it’s that they are choosing to be comfortable and courageous enough to choose to be truthful, honest, and open.
While I discourage young men and women who understand that they are homosexual from being sexually active (the same I would do for high school students who are heterosexual), it is essential to understand that they must be embraced and accepted for their identity. Being gay is not a choice. Recognizing that exposure of children to messages of acceptance and belittling homosexuality to a point where it is recognized and understood as being equal, in all ways, to heterosexuality is the goal all Americans should teach, where coming out of the closet becomes less of a difficult point in a young person’s life, as much as being a “matter-of-fact” in light of feelings and attractions encountered during sexual maturity.
